Ernst Jean Ulysse
July 13, 1959 - August 15th, 2021
Ernst Jean Ulysse was born on July 13, 1959 in the commune of Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti. He is the beloved son of Agnes Ulysse and the late Saint Surin Ulysse. He was commonly known to many by the nickname of Tifrè (little brother), which was a name given to him by his older sister Michelle, at the age of 2. He grew up in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti and attended the Dikiny Seminary Adventist School after high school for one year. Thereafter, he immigrated to New York, United States with his older sister, Michelle on January 5, 1982. Through the help of their parents, they were later joined by the rest of their siblings in July of that year.
Upon entering the U.S, he desired to go to medical school; so much so that he even requested family members to ship biological science textbooks from Haiti to the U.S (in which they did). However, upon enrolling at York College, City University of New York, NY in September 1982, he decided to pursue a different route and less expensive education in business and information system management. He graduated in Spring 1987 with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computer Science/Technology & Programming. Throughout the years, he continued his lifelong passion, pursuits and education in business, information technology, and computer science. This includes various entrepreneurial endeavors in IT consulting and system administration and his 25 year role as co-founder, Academic Dean and V.P of Operations/Technology for the Career Institute of Health & Technology (formerly Computer Career Center), Garden City, Westbury, Queens, and Brooklyn, NY campuses. In this role, Ernst was regarded as Mr. U, where everyone knew if you called him; he would be the first to respond to any issue. His decision to pursue business and help build and run a successful trade school ultimately trumped his initial goal of pursuing medicine. To this day, many of the school’s students have gone on to pursue life changing careers as certified Medical Assistants, certified IT professionals, licenced electricians, and certified auto mechanics.
Ernst remained heavily involved in community endeavors throughout his lifetime and career as a Board Member of the Hempstead NY Boys & Girls Club, the Coalition of New York State Career Schools, Scholarship Committee Board Member of Unidad Latina and Technical Advisor/Consultant for the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACCI). Additionally, he served as the Vice Chairman at the CAST International Academy for Culture, Arts, Science and Technology and board director for the Nowodworski Foundation. These are just minor examples of how he remained generous with heart, time, and resources throughout his lifetime. He would literally give the shirt off his back for any of his loved ones and stop whatever he was doing to attend to their needs. He will also be remembered by many for some of the following characteristics:
He loved making people laugh through his charisma and welcoming nature
He would lighten the mood of any event or room
He loved spending time with family and friends
He loved being outside and doing yard work. This included cutting the grass, planting, raking leaves, doing outside construction work, etc.
He was an explorer by heart. He loved going on vacations and visiting new places. This included taking the train and buses to different destinations throughout New York City.
He had a high business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit
Ernst is survived by his wife: Madgy Decembre Ulysse; three (3) children and daughter-in-law: Maritsa, Guerlain & Adeline, and Liliann Ulysse; his mother: Agnes Ulysse; 4 (four) brothers and sisters and their family members: Michelle & Xavier Belizaire and their children Michexa & Jonathan, and Nathaniel; Jean Rene & Helene Ulysse and their children Renee and Christine; Ronaze & Danielle Ulysse and their child Anastazia; Nadine & Martin McKinney and their children Nataly & Westley, Martine, Nadia, Marlene, and Marie; great nephew: Alexander Joseph Charles; the Bellanton family; the Ulysse family; the Decembre Family; and many more cousins, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, other extended family members, and lifelong friends.
Ernst leaves behind a great legacy as he has touched many lives throughout the years. We will miss our dad, husband, brother, cousin, and Uncle Tifrè very much. If Ernst (Tifrè) had a message for us, he would laughingly tell us to STOP CRYING, LIFE GOES ON!
