Walter Kobbe

October 3, 1946 - January 9, 2021

Walter Kobbe lost his battle with cancer on January 9, 2021, just six months after his initial diagnosis of Stage IV esophageal adenocarcinoma. He was 74.

Walter, a graduate of Franklin K. Lane High School in Woodhaven, Queens, owned and operated Walter Kobbe Painting, with residential and commercial customers in Queens and Western Nassau County.

He and his wife of 37 years, Marianne, were fans of thoroughbred racing, and attended the races at Belmont regularly, along with annual pilgrimages to Saratoga in August.

Walter was also an avid and enthusiastic golfer, and notably played seventy-seven rounds of golf in 2019, the year he retired.

But most people knew Walter as an accomplished photographer specializing in thoroughbred horse racing. His photos, taken at Belmont and Saratoga as well as at morning workouts, featured not only the horses, but also the trainers, jockeys, exercise riders and backstretch workers who make the sport possible.

His photography was exhibited at the Bryant Library in Roslyn and at the Malverne Public Library, and can be viewed on his Flickr site at flickr.com/photos/nyhorseracing

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, funeral arrangements will be private.

Inurnment will be at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, New York.

Donations to the American Cancer Society at http://www.cancer.org are suggested in lieu of flowers.
